What is reclaimed lumber?

Reclaimed lumber is wood salvaged from its original application for purposes of decorative use. Most reclaimed lumber comes from timbers and pieces rescued from old barns, factories, and warehouses. However, reclaimed lumber can also be salvaged from less traditional options such as coal mines and wine barrels. Reclaimed lumber is used primarily for decoration and home building, including siding, architectural details, cabinetry, furniture, and flooring.

Why is reclaimed lumber popular?

Reclaimed lumber is popular because of the wood’s unique appearance, influence on “green building,” the history of the wood, and the wood’s physical characteristics such as strength, stability, and durability. The increased strength of reclaimed lumber is often attributed to the wood typically having been harvested from young growth timber, producing a denser grain.
